Designed by Merrick Architecture—recipients of the RAIC Award for Outstanding Architectural Firm in 2005—this steel and concrete building comprises 172 condominium residences across two connected 12-storey towers (North and South), with approximately 800 square metres of ground-floor commercial space along Humboldt Street.

Architecture & Design

The Aria occupies a prominent site on the same city block as the historic Crystal Garden, steps from the Fairmont Empress Hotel and the Inner Harbour causeway. Merrick Architecture crafted a building form that responds thoughtfully to its heritage context while establishing a confident contemporary presence.

The distinctive curved and glazed southwest façade was designed to complement the building's historic neighbours: the Church of Our Lord, the Crystal Garden, and Cridge Park with its heritage bowling green. Along Humboldt Street, the architecture shifts to a more traditional urban streetwall expression through the extensive use of clay brick, generous punched windows, and wrought iron balustrades that reference Victoria's architectural heritage.

The stepped building form creates generously landscaped roof gardens at multiple levels, offering residents private outdoor amenity spaces with panoramic views. Exposed concrete structural elements are expressed on all four elevations, including substantial overhangs on the south and west façades that serve as passive solar shading to reduce summer overheating within the suites.

A defining artistic element of The Aria is its namesake public art installation: sculptural concrete forms integrated into the ground-level building columns on all façades. The project also introduced a major public walkway along the western edge of the site, designed to connect Cridge Park with the public plaza fronting Douglas Street to the north—contributing to the neighbourhood's pedestrian network.
